New Year’s Eve shootings leave 1 dead, 1 injured in Gary

A 22-year-old man is dead from a suspected accidental shooting and an 18-year-old was injured in a separate shooting New Year’s Eve in Gary, police said.

Police responded to a call 11:42 p.m. Monday for a male gunshot wound victim in the 700 block of Kentucky Street, Commander Jack Hamady said in a release.

Officers found Kevonte Alfred inside a residence with a single gunshot wound, Hamady said. Alfred was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake where he was pronounced dead New Year’s Day, according to Hamady.

The Lake County coroner’s office ruled Alfred’s death a homicide, according to a release.

“Witnesses were interviewed inside the residence and the incident is still under investigation,” Hamady said. “A person of interest was taken into custody and released after being interviewed.”

“At this time, the incident appears to be an accidental shooting and the summary of the investigation will be turned over to the Lake County prosecutor’s office for review,” Hamady said.

At 10:31 p.m. New Year’s Eve, officers responded to a call for another gunshot wound victim in the 1000 block of East 15th Avenue, Hamady said.

Officers found a 18-year-old woman from Gary with a “single gunshot wound to her hip area,” according to Hamady. Gary Fire Department took the woman to Methodist Hospitals Northlake where she underwent surgery, he said.

Witnesses said they were at a New Year’s Eve celebration when they “heard gunshots and noticed the victim had been struck by a bullet from an unknown direction,” according to Hamady.
